The Blue and Gold Marching Machine, one of the nation's premier bands, is known for high-stepping performances, precise drills, powerful yet melodic sound, and boundless energy. As North Carolina’s leading band and a top HBCU marching band, NC A&T State University’s Blue & Gold Marching Machine commands attention.
Under the leadership of Dr. Kenneth Ruff, the band has achieved notable recognition, including winning the Honda Battle of the Bands, serving as the Carolina Panthers’ official band, leading the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, performing in the 2024 Tournament of Roses Parade, and winning the 2023 ESPN Band of the Year.
The band, comprising around 250 members from diverse majors, performs at various school and community events. Membership is audition-based, open to all university students. Known for its versatility, the Marching Machine plays different genres and incorporates varied marching styles, bringing pride to the university and its community.
Cold Steel is a 50 member drumline. The ensemble provides the rhythmic pulse and cadences for the University marching band. The percussion section performs for various university activities. They also perform at events outside of the university. The ensemble has performed at several elementary, middle, and high schools. Students of Cold Steel also participate in the symphonic, concert, jazz, and pep bands.
